Buddy Check Program

Self-harm is now the second leading cause of death among teenagers in Canada. As firefighters, we encounter this tragic reality all too often.
However, we have also experienced firsthand how mental health training can help us manage our own well-being in these challenging situations. Through this training, we’ve learned that it doesn’t always take a traumatic experience to cause mental health struggles; everyday life challenges, if not managed correctly, can escalate into significant problems.
Our Buddy Check program leans into the unique mentorship role a coach has in a young person’s life. We provide them with education and information packages to help them talk to their players about mental health.
Teams Engaged: Over 60 teams across the North Shore have participated in this life-changing initiative.

Everyone Deserves to Play
For thirteen years, we've partnered with Athletics for Kids because we believe every child should have the chance to play.

As firefighters, we see the value of teamwork and the significant role sports play in someone's life. With our support, Athletics for Kids has issued over 1000 Sports4Life Grants right here on the North Shore and over 13,000 Sports4Life Grants in total. This vital work is ensuring that financial barriers don't stop kids from participating in sports.

Gently Down the Seymour:
Learning Through Nature
For the past fourteen years, the DNV Fire Charity has proudly supported the Seymour Salmonid Society's Hatchery, Education Centre and the ‘Gently Down the Seymour’ program.

Gently Down the Seymour is an incredible initiative that engages over 2,300 young adventurers each year, teaching them about the salmon life cycle and the importance of environmental stewardship.

We aim to inspire the next generation of first responders and healthcare workers. That's why we offer five high school scholarships annually to support individuals on their path to these remarkable careers.

Our scholarships are issued in the loving memory of our fallen firefighters, both those lost in the line of duty and those who have passed from job-related illnesses. Honouring our firefighters who not only served their communities, but also made the ultimate sacrifice: Harvey McKay, Leonard James Maurer, Robert (Bob) Harrison, and Steve Villeneuve.

Seventy years ago, a woman in need turned to her local firefighters, who took to the streets to fill a boot with donations. Their support enabled her to get the life-changing surgery she needed. Many years ago, one of our firefighter’s wives received the tragic news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. When we learned about how the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society was there for her and her family, and what an incredible experience it was to have them as a resource, we knew this was an organization we needed to support. With our help, they have provided over 166,000 patient trips.
